Wedding at Notre-Dame Cathedral

Earlier this summer we had the privilege of photographing the wedding of two people who have devoted their careers to serving our country. It was a beautiful ceremony at Notre-Dame Cathedral, Ottawa’s oldest and largest Church. The Cathedral is recognized as an historic monument, and the incredibly beautiful architecture was a joy to capture. The bride was stunning in a gown sprinkled with Swarovski crystals, and the groom was dapper in suit and tie, along with his son who was the best man.

After the ceremony a reception took place at the Rideau Club, an establishment with a history as long as the cathedral. The Rideau Club was formed by Sir John A Macdonald and D’arcy McGee among others and continues today with a distinguished membership of political, business and community leaders. And it has some of the best views in the city I have ever seen. A jazz trio provided music for cocktails and dinner, and the tables were adorned with gorgeous blooms. An elegant way to celebrate the love and companionship of a wonderful couple.

The Bytown Bride

A short time ago we had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Jen from Trixie Tulip. If you’re planning a wedding in the Ottawa area, her blog The Bytown Bride is an excellent site, and is intended to be a place where couples can engage vendors by asking questions and getting good information. Also an event planner, she along with Wendy of Beyond Events, is organizing wonderful networking events for wedding professionals in the Ottawa area, and I can’t wait to attend their next spectacular function. Trixie Tulip loves all things weddings, and we are very lucky to have such a great local resource!

I’m also excited because we’ve got a project we’re working on with Trixie Tulip, and I’ll be sharing that soon!

Spring Renos | Studio 1948 Ottawa Wedding Photographers

Spring has sprung in Ottawa, and before wedding season is in full swing we wanted to give Studio 1948 a bit of a freshening up. Both website and this photography blog have undergone a little make-over. Now, we are quite definitely photographers, not graphic designers or web gurus, but there were a few things we wanted to have. We love our logo created for us by Jo Klima of The Darling Tree so that was definitely sticking around. And we wanted something clean, modern and just a touch retro, so we kept things simple with fonts and minimal colour to better display the photographs, especially our very favorite black and white. Our inspiration was vintage city wedding photographs from the 40’s and 50’s, architectural and classic, but modern. There is more to come, and we’ll be tweaking a few details here and there in the days to come.

Wedding at the Courtyard | Ottawa Wedding Photographers

Nancy and Michael got married on perhaps one of the most beautiful and romantic days of the year- Valentine’s Day weekend, during Winterlude in Ottawa and surrounded by softly falling snow just for good measure. It was kind of magical, and that was fitting considering they are two wonderfully sweet individuals, with pretty amazing friends and family who gathered with them to witness their marriage.

I hadn’t had a chance to meet Nancy until a few days before the wedding, but Graeme had already met with her and assured me that she was probably one of the nicest people he’d ever met. He wasn’t wrong. We chatted like old friends from the beginning, and when I arrived at The Westin that morning it was the same- I was just one of the girls, albeit one who was hidden behind a camera most of the time! Downtown was bustling and hundreds of people were skating on the Rideau Canal, and it was an exciting place to start the day.

A few of my favorites from getting ready before the ceremony:

The bouquet was lovely, and it smelled as good as it looked. The bride’s sister carried an identical bouquet as her honour attendant.

Meanwhile, Graeme was at the bride’s parents home with Michael..

but smiles weren’t far off!

Time to leave, and a concierge managed to grab a taxi on one of the busiest days in Ottawa, good thing because that wind was chilly!

The next is one of my favorites. Children are so unpredictable, and rarely want to stand still for a formal portrait- but that can be a good thing. For me, this is the little guy we saw all evening, with his sweet but mischievous grin and ready to zoom! Love it.

The Courtyard Restaurant in the Byward Market is a beautiful space for an intimate wedding. The staff is lovely, and the ambience is excellent for candlelit receptions. It’s always a pleasure to shoot there, and for Nancy and Michael’s wedding the added little touches were perfect.

Like the super fun kids table, that actually kept the children amused and happy!

But after the tired kiddos were taken home for some much deserved sleep, the music was turned up and the guests got down!

The entire day was incredible, and we were extremely privileged to be there to capture it all. Later that night, at home, we both said how welcome we were made to feel, by both the couple and their family and friends. Truly one of the best days. And, Nancy, I know you’re waiting anxiously for this sneak peek- so I have to include this one!

The lovely bride and her lovely sister, catching snowflakes on their tongues as we walked to the Courtyard. I love a bride in boots, and you two have such a great sense of fun! Just awesome! Thank you so much Nancy, Michael and family. We can’t wait to see you again!

Wedding at the Canada Science and Technology Museum | Studio 1948 Weddings

When Derek and Katrina mentioned where they planned to tie the knot, I started crossing my fingers and silently hoping ‘pick me, pick me!’. A departure from traditional wedding venues, a wedding at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa would prove to be very unique, and very cool. Not to mention that they are a great couple and I LOVE their shared sense of humour. The ceremony and reception were held in the Locomotive Room at the museum. The room itself is fantastic with two huge steam trains flanking the space, and it was a beautiful and meaningful evening. Friends and family gave speeches and raised glasses, and there were a few tears and lots of smiles and laughter. It really was a celebration of two people meant for each other. It was also quite fitting that Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (confession: I had to ask to get the name right) joined the newlyweds at Table One. After all, we were at Science & Tech, he would have been right at home. A sneak peek of some favorites from the night: Getting ready… The bride wore a custom gown made by Catherine Langlois that fit her perfectly.

And then they danced…

Wedding Photographers in Ottawa | That Autumn Light

There is just something about the fall light in Ottawa, it’s so soft and beautiful. I’m finally getting the chance to post these- we were blessed with a perfect sunny day that took us right into evening. It was one of those days that is hot enough to feel like summer, but the light and the crispness in the air makes sure you know it’s autumn and winter is not far away! But after all the rainy weekends we’d had I would have been happy had it just stayed dry!
