One of the things I appreciate most about my children is that they teach me as much as I teach them, probably more. When we get older, we get practical. And we forget. We forget that there is value in imagination and daydreams and being fanciful.

Yesterday my daughter found a magic wand in a mud puddle, and indeed created something magical. In 20 years she will be all grown up, and too big for me to kiss goodnight and tuck her in. But when I look at this portrait, I will remember her at 5 years old– a princess in a mud puddle, finding magic in an ordinary day.

Spring has sprung in Ottawa, and before wedding season is in full swing we wanted to give Studio 1948 a bit of a freshening up. Both website and this photography blog have undergone a little make-over. Now, we are quite definitely photographers, not graphic designers or web gurus, but there were a few things we wanted to have. We love our logo created for us by Jo Klima of The Darling Tree so that was definitely sticking around. And we wanted something clean, modern and just a touch retro, so we kept things simple with fonts and minimal colour to better display the photographs, especially our very favorite black and white. Our inspiration was vintage city wedding photographs from the 40’s and 50’s, architectural and classic, but modern. There is more to come, and we’ll be tweaking a few details here and there in the days to come.

We wanted to share one of our favorite ways to display and archive portraits from your session. Every time someone orders our Image Box Collection we get really excited, because we know they will LOVE it. It’s one of those things that really has to be seen to be appreciated, and it can be completely customized to suit your family or child portrait session. So often prints don’t get framed despite best intentions, and images boxes are such a fabulous and modern way to display and care for your special images.

And because a picture is worth a thousand words, a few pictures of a client’s order that we managed to snap before packaging it up and sending to it’s new home…

Spring Child or Family Portrait Special! | Ottawa Child and Family Photographers

It’s that time again! The weather is getting nicer and we are feeling generous!

Every session booked from now until April 30th 2010 will also receive a beautiful 16×20 wall portrait, a value of $125.00. We’re excited to get outside and have some fun, and would like you to join us- and walk away with a stunning fine art portrait.

The fine print: Sessions are about one to two hours in length and we will be shooting at a location of your choice, a favorite park, your home, or any other spot you would love to use within the Ottawa area. Sessions must be booked before April 30th, 2010 and the session fee and portrait agreement is due at time of booking. Availability is limited and sessions will be booked on a first come first serve basis, we cannot hold a date without the retainer. Your proofs will be available approximately two weeks after your session, at which time you will select the image you would like as your gift 16×20 wall portrait.

Downtown Ottawa Engagement Session | Studio 1948 Wedding Photographers

There are always a few little butterflies before meeting a couple for the first time, but within seconds of meeting this beautiful pair I knew we’d be just fine. They are so sweet and nice that you can’t help but immediately feel at ease. We took advantage of downtown Ottawa for their engagement session, and even braved the cold and ventured outside for a little natural light photography. If they were cold they didn’t show it. Guess love will do that.

Cumberland Engagement | Ottawa Wedding Photographers

As promised, more from that lovely winter engagement session! There’s just something about winter that is so romantic and perfect for engagement sessions. Summer, spring and fall are of course beautiful, so perhaps it’s that a little chill in the air and a light dusting of snow just makes a couple in love want to snuggle even closer. Whatever it is, it sure makes being a wedding photographer in Ottawa a lot of fun, and this photographer is extra appreciative of all four seasons!

They were still up for a little fun, despite the cold weather! Maybe getting a little practice before they cross the real threshold after their wedding?

We couldn’t have asked for a better location, either- just the perfect mix of vintage and modern, sigh…

Love | Ottawa Engagement Photography

A sneak peek for an absolutely amazing couple who put up with cold toes (notice I didn’t say feet?) so we could take advantage of the snow and get some really fun and beautiful shots. I was introduced to gorgeous Cumberland, which was quite a treat- it’s so pretty there, and I can’t wait to go back.

It’s been oh so snowy, and strangely this year we’ve actually been enjoying the copious amount of white stuff that has come our way (and yes, I’ve had to shovel it). While an escape to warmer climes may be very appealing sometimes, I think we would dearly miss our Canadian seasons, even winter. The snow can be so beautiful in photographs. I’m just putting the finishing touches on a New Year’s Eve engagement session with a wonderful couple, that I think was made perfectly stunning by the light snowfall we encountered while shooting.

We took some time to play outside ourselves, and since we don’t go too far without a camera, got a couple of nice photos for the scrapbook. (We really should get a scrapbook one of these days.) It was also a bit of a milestone event, as it marked the very first time our littlest climbed a tree- following her big brother of course, and terrifying her parents a little bit. Hence the twiggy bits of tree in some of the shots! And the doggies had lots of fun too.

Wedding Photographers in Ottawa | That Autumn Light

There is just something about the fall light in Ottawa, it’s so soft and beautiful. I’m finally getting the chance to post these- we were blessed with a perfect sunny day that took us right into evening. It was one of those days that is hot enough to feel like summer, but the light and the crispness in the air makes sure you know it’s autumn and winter is not far away! But after all the rainy weekends we’d had I would have been happy had it just stayed dry!
