Spring Renos | Studio 1948 Ottawa Wedding Photographers

Spring has sprung in Ottawa, and before wedding season is in full swing we wanted to give Studio 1948 a bit of a freshening up. Both website and this photography blog have undergone a little make-over. Now, we are quite definitely photographers, not graphic designers or web gurus, but there were a few things we wanted to have. We love our logo created for us by Jo Klima of The Darling Tree so that was definitely sticking around. And we wanted something clean, modern and just a touch retro, so we kept things simple with fonts and minimal colour to better display the photographs, especially our very favorite black and white. Our inspiration was vintage city wedding photographs from the 40’s and 50’s, architectural and classic, but modern. There is more to come, and we’ll be tweaking a few details here and there in the days to come.

Sometimes when you meet with a client it feels more like you’ve just spend the afternoon with a good friend, rather than someone you just met. Sarah was definitely one of those! She’s got a fantastic sense of humour and we had a really great time shooting some new and fresh headshots for her. Ottawa has some great little spots for headshot photography on location, and we really enjoy the spontaneity and dynamic energy that working outside of a studio brings.

It was hard to choose my favorites, but here are a few…

Sarah is so versatile, and reviewing her frames I was really struck with how she could look like a completely different person from shot to shot. Certainly a talented actor with a very bright future, a perfect leading lady for theatre, film and televison.

Sarah contacted us for headshots recently, and wanted something fresh and modern as she begins her career. The entire headshot session was shot on location, and I had a great time getting to know Sarah, and her mom.

A few of my favorites- doesn’t she just look like the quintessential California girl? Who would guess she hails from the Great White North!

We were recently contacted by another young actor who wanted professional yet contemporary headshots as he moves on with his career in theater. One of our favorite spots to shoot this kind of session is the National Arts Centre– it’s just so fitting! I think we got some really versatile and fresh images for Luca, and don’t be surprised if you see his face a lot more in the near future. When someone loves what they do it shows, and great things await!

Well, after an all-too-brief trip to the East Coast we are back at it, feeling slightly refreshed but still missing that sea air. There is nothing like it, and I’m counting the days until we can go back to the beach! The kiddos loved swimming, and we all tried skim boarding for the first time. What is skim boarding? Think ’surfing’ + ’snowboarding’ but in only a few inches of water. So much fun, but very hard to do at first. There was never a dull day, always lots to do, and we enjoyed our vacation. The trip home was a different story, but it’s too long for the blog! Ottawa has it’s charms though, and we’re happy to be home.

Also calling Ottawa home now is this lovely gal. We had a great time wandering around the Byward Market and looking for interesting light and locations, it was one of those sessions that’s so comfortable it felt like I was just strolling with a friend I’ve known for ages. Ottawa isn’t as big and busy as NYC, but I hope you love it here, Ms. N.!

It’s always a really nice feeling when someone chooses you to be their photographer. And it’s a real honour when another talented photographer picks you to photograph them. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a woman who is not just a fantastic photog, but is also an amazing, fun and giving person. She contributes in so many ways, and donates much of her ephemeral free time to various not-for-profit organizations and different groups in the community. Many of you might be familiar with the Ottawa Dog Blog, an incredible resource for so many animal lovers in the capital region, and a true labour of love for this gal. You can see more of her fun and crazy good work here. And, not to mention that she’s totally gorgeous too!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks and I’ve been remiss in updating the blog. It’s a love/hate relationship I have with this thing. I love it because I can easily keep people up to date with what’s going on with Studio1948, and share recent work- especially new favorites. I hate it because if I’d rather be shooting, or editing, or anything else that involves photography. And if I’m in front of the computer writing a blog post then I’m not out there with my camera! But it’s all about balance, and much as I’d love to just eat, sleep and drink photography- there are other things to attend to, important things. Like keeping in touch!

First up:

Les contacted me recently- he is an up-and-coming young actor and needed new headshots. Now, I absolutely love shooting headshots. I love working with actors, and find it fascinating how much they can give you from just the shoulders up! I also adore theater and cinema, but after my one and only (dreadful) audition knew they would never be in my future. Photographing actors at least lets me do what I do well, while still getting to experience a little part of that world.

What could be more fitting that shooting an actor’s headshots at the National Arts Centre? We started inside, but quickly went outdoors since it was such a beautiful day, and the NAC has a great rooftop garden. Les was great- he had tons of presence and excellent range. We shot for a short amount of time, and got so much diversity. He’ll be able to choose from several different looks tailored to the type of role he’s going for!
